| Obverse description | Central field displays the quartered heraldic shield of Cardinal Guido Ascanio Sforza, flanked on either side by standing figures of saints or angels serving as supporters. Above the shield rises the papal umbrella (umbraculum) surmounted by radiating rays, a symbol of sede vacante authority. The arrangement is characteristic of Renaissance papal coinage produced during an interregnum, with the umbrella substituting for the papal tiara. The encircling Latin legend reads SEDE VACANTE AN 1555, denoting the vacancy of the Holy See in the year 1555. |
