| Obverse description | Central field displays the papal arms of Gregory XIII surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, rendered in a bold, slightly asymmetrical hammered style characteristic of late sixteenth-century Roman coinage. The shield bears the Boncompagni family dragon device, flanked by elaborate strapwork mantling. A circular Latin legend surrounds the arms along the periphery of the flan. |
