| Obverse description | The obverse displays the papal coat of arms of Gregory XIII centered in the field, consisting of a shield bearing a dragon passant, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter rendered in the Mannerist style typical of late sixteenth-century Roman coinage. The shield is framed by elaborate foliate and strapwork cartouche decoration. A beaded inner border surrounds the central device. The circular Latin legend GREGORIVS XIII P MAX runs along the outer margin, identifying the pontiff as Supreme Pontiff. |
