Obverse description Central field displays the heraldic arms of Cardinal Giovanni Battista Spinola, camerlingo during the Sede Vacante of 1700, surmounted by the papal umbrella (umbraculum) and crossed keys, the traditional symbols of the vacancy of the Holy See. The shield is quartered, featuring the checky and plain divisions characteristic of the Spinola family arms, flanked by tasselled cordons arranged in hierarchical rows. The circular legend surrounding the arms reads SEDE · VACANTE · MDCC, with a fine dentilated border encircling the entire design.
