Clement XI's pontificate was dominated by the War of the Spanish Succession, and 1707 was among its most turbulent years for the Papal States — Imperial troops under Joseph I occupied territories in the Marche and briefly threatened Rome itself after Clement had recognized Philip V of Anjou as king of Spain, a choice the Habsburgs did not forgive. This coin was struck in that atmosphere of political coercion, with the pope effectively minting under duress.
The giulio denomination traces back to Julius II, for whom it was created in the early sixteenth century.
