Additional information

Alexander VII — born Fabio Chigi — ascended to the papacy in 1655 after serving as the chief papal negotiator at the Peace of Westphalia in 1648, a settlement he publicly despised for the concessions it granted to Protestant powers. His pontificate coincided with a period of sustained monetary pressure in the Papal States, where repeated debasement of billon coinage drove demand toward higher-denomination silver issues like the giulio.

The "narrow arms" designation distinguishes this emission from a parallel type with broader escutcheon proportions — a die variation significant enough to warrant separate catalog classification under Berman.
