Roberto d'Angiò inherited Naples in 1309 following the death of his father Charles II, but his claim required years of political maneuvering — including a prolonged captivity in Aragon and a coronation performed by Pope Clement V in Avignon rather than in the kingdom itself. The gigliato was the signature silver denomination of Angevin Naples, widely circulated across the eastern Mediterranean and frequently imitated by Levantine mints precisely because its weight and fineness were trusted by traders operating in Crusader and Byzantine markets.
