| Beschrijving keerzijde | The Lion of Judah, the traditional imperial symbol of Ethiopia, depicted passant to the right in high relief, bearing the imperial crown upon its head and holding a processional staff or scepter topped with a cross in its raised right forepaw. Two six-pointed stars appear in the field flanking the lion, one to the upper left and one to the lower right. A circular Ge'ez legend fills the border within a beaded rim, and the denomination in Ge'ez numerals is inscribed in the exergue below a ground line. |

Ethiopia's 1931 coinage reform was driven by Haile Selassie's push to modernize the imperial monetary system following his coronation in November 1930. Pattern pieces from this series were struck in Paris at the Monnaie de Paris, where the dies were prepared before any decision on final specifications was confirmed. The gersh denominations proved particularly contentious in the approval process, and several compositional and dimensional variants were tested.
