The Azadi ("Freedom") gold coin series was introduced in 1979 following the Islamic Revolution, replacing the Pahlavi coinage issued under Mohammad Reza Shah. The 1-gerami fractional denomination targets domestic retail gold investment, a market the Central Bank has long used as a pressure valve against currency instability — particularly acute after 2010, when intensifying international sanctions began collapsing the rial's purchasing power.
By 2011–2012, private Iranian households were aggressively converting rial savings into Azadi fractionals, driving premiums well above gold spot.
