Additional information

Frederick IV ruled Meissen jointly with his brothers under the Wettin partition arrangements that fragmented authority across the Saxon territories through the late 14th and early 15th centuries. The Fürstengroschen denomination emerged directly from the broad groschen tradition established at the Freiberg mint, which had driven Saxon silver coinage since the discoveries at the Erzgebirge mines two centuries earlier. Freiberg's continued output during this period reflects the mines' sustained productivity even as political control above ground remained contested among the Wettin heirs.
