This piece is one of several pattern types produced that year as the mint experimented with designs before settling on the decimalized rin/sen/yen structure formally adopted in 1871. The "Fuji-hata" designation refers to the specific design trial, and surviving examples are extremely rare — patterns of this period were struck in minimal numbers for official review, not circulation.
