Rama IV — Mongkut — died in October 1868, meaning this 1869 striking was issued under the regency preceding Rama V's formal coronation. The fuang was a traditional Siamese fractional unit equal to one-eighth of a baht, and the Royal Siamese Mint had only recently transitioned from hand-struck bullet coinage to Western-style milled pieces under Mongkut's modernization push in the 1860s. Foreign trade pressure, particularly from British merchants demanding consistent weight and fineness, drove that shift faster than the palace had initially intended.
