Additional information

Frederick II ordered a complete overhaul of Prussian coinage following his seizure of Silesia in the 1740s, using the province's substantial silver revenues to stabilize and expand gold production. The Friedrich d'Or series became the prestige emission of his reign, struck to a fineness that deliberately exceeded French louis d'or standards — a calculated economic and diplomatic signal.

The 1749 issue falls within the early phase of the type, before the minor die modifications documented by Kluge in the mid-1750s.
