Issued for French-mandated Cameroon and Togo following the League of Nations partition of former German colonial territories after World War I, these coins were struck specifically because the new mandate boundaries created administrative zones that couldn't simply absorb existing French West African currency without political complication. The League mandate system technically prohibited treating the territories as outright colonies, requiring a distinct monetary identity. Production covered only two years before the broader French Equatorial and West African currency frameworks absorbed the region.
