Monaco's Trésorerie Générale issued these small-denomination emergency notes in response to the acute coin shortage that gripped much of Europe during and after the First World War. Printed locally by the Veuve A. Chêne press rather than shipped to a major security printer in Paris, the entire production stayed within the Principality — unusual for a note of this period from such a small issuer.
The Série B designation distinguishes this run from the earlier Série A release of the same denomination. Albert Berthe's engraving work gives the note a quality above what one might expect from a wartime emergency fractional.
