Obverse description The obverse features a left-facing draped bust of Marianne, the allegorical figure of Liberty, wearing a Phrygian cap as a symbol of freedom. The effigy, created by engraver Augustin Dupré in 1795 and inspired by Minerva, goddess of intelligence and wisdom, is rendered in a neoclassical style. The engraver's signature 'Dupré' appears below the bust in the lower field. The peripheral legend 'REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE' encircles the design.
