Piéforts are institutional pieces — struck at double or greater thickness on specially prepared planchets, distributed to archives, assay offices, and favored collectors rather than circulation. This gold example is an exception to the usual silver piéfort practice at the Monnaie de Paris, making it considerably rarer than the silver essai of the same type. The 1960 date places it in the early years of Monaco's post-war monetary relationship with France, when Monégasque franc issues were struck under agreement with Paris and were legal tender in both jurisdictions.
