Piéforts are struck at double the normal planchet thickness, a practice the Monnaie de Paris has used for centuries to produce presentation-quality trial pieces for official approval and distribution to dignitaries. The 1948 aluminium franc piéfort sits in a particularly transitional moment for French coinage — postwar austerity had pushed the standard circulation franc into aluminium, a metal the French mint had little pre-war experience striking at scale. The piéfort format documented that adjustment for the record.
KM#PE1 designation confirms this as the first catalogued piéfort entry for the Fourth Republic franc series.
