Obverse description Left-facing draped bust of Marianne, the allegorical figure of Liberty, wearing a winged Phrygian cap, rendered in the neoclassical style by engraver L. Bazor. The field to the rear of the effigy features sailing ships in the background, evoking maritime trade and colonial connection. The legend REPUBLIQUE FRANÇAISE UNION FRANÇAISE arcs around the periphery, with the engraver's signature L BAZOR appearing below the truncation. The word ESSAI (Pattern) and the date 1948 are also present in the design.
