Essai pieces produced by the Monnaie de Paris for Morocco in the late 1920s occupied a peculiar administrative space — struck as pattern approvals for the French Protectorate authorities rather than for circulation, they were distributed in small quantities to officials and select collectors. The 1928 series coincided with a period of consolidating French monetary control over Morocco, with Paris effectively dictating coinage policy for a nominally sovereign sultanate. Muhammad VI, as he appears on these issues, was Sultan Muhammad ibn Yusuf, who would later become Mohammed V and lead Morocco to independence in 1956.
