| 正面描述 | Bare-headed effigy of Grand Duchess Marie-Adélaïde facing left, with her hair swept up in an elaborate chignon, wearing a high-collared draped garment. The word ESSAI appears in small capitals in the right field behind the portrait. The circular legend reads MARIE-ADELAIDE • GRANDE DUCHESSE DE LUXEMBOURG, separated by dots, running along the inner border of a beaded rim. The engraver's initial F appears at the base of the design near the bottom of the coin. |

Marie-Adélaïde became Grand Duchess in 1912 at eighteen, following the death of her father Guillaume IV. This essai — a trial strike never approved for circulation — was produced as Luxembourg evaluated its coinage options in the months before the German invasion of August 1914 effectively halted any domestic monetary planning. The occupation suspended the question entirely.
The piece exists in very small numbers, struck for official evaluation rather than distribution.
