Louis XVIII's return to the throne in 1814 — and more durably after the Hundred Days in 1815 — required a complete recoinage to erase Napoleonic imagery from French pockets. The 1816 franc series was part of that deliberate political housecleaning, with the new types rushed into production across multiple mints as the Bourbons worked to reassert dynastic legitimacy through everyday commerce. Production continued across Paris, Bayonne, Bordeaux, Lyon, Marseille, Nantes, and several others, making mint mark attribution essential to any serious study of the type.
