Essai pieces for French Equatorial Africa were produced at the Paris Mint as trial strikings submitted for official approval before authorizing full production runs. This particular essai was never followed by a circulation issue in copper-nickel — the 1 franc denomination for the territory moved to aluminum, making KM#E1 a dead-end trial with no corresponding business strike in this composition.
