Collet & Gouvernet operated as a construction contractor in French colonial Algeria, and like many large enterprises working in remote or cash-poor environments, issued their own aluminium tokens to manage wages and canteen purchases when small change was unavailable or impractical. The small '1' variety distinguishes this piece from a parallel issue with a larger numeral — a minor typographic difference that nonetheless creates two catalogued varieties under the same issuing authority.
