1 Franc - Chambre de Commerce de la Corrèze 1915

French chambers of commerce were authorized to issue emergency small-denomination notes in August 1914, when the mobilization for the First World War triggered an immediate hoarding crisis that stripped coins almost entirely from daily commerce. The Corrèze chamber moved quickly; this 1915 franc note from Tulle filled a gap the Banque de France had neither the capacity nor the mandate to address at the retail level.

Pierre Dumont's Limoges press handled a number of regional nécessité issues during this period. The watermarked paper was a meaningful security measure for what was, functionally, a local scrip redeemable only within the département.
