| Obverse description | Brown letterpress note with a floral and foliate border framing the entire face. A diamond-shaped vignette at upper centre contains the municipal arms of Carcassonne. The issuer's name, CHAMBRE DE COMMERCE DE CARCASSONNE, is set in large display type below, followed by the deliberation date and the bold denomination UN FRANC in the centre field. Two manuscript signature lines, one for the Trésorier and one for the Président, flank a typeset serial number, with the redeemability clause printed below in italic script. |

Emergency paper issued by a regional chamber of commerce rather than any banking authority — a direct result of the acute coin shortage that followed France's August 1914 mobilization, when hoarding stripped small change from circulation almost overnight. Hundreds of French chambers and municipalities resorted to printing their own fractional notes that autumn, and Carcassonne was among the earliest.
L. Cassan Ainé was a regional Toulouse printer, not a security specialist, which makes the inclusion of a watermark notable — a deliberate attempt at legitimacy that most comparable emergency issues skipped entirely.
