Bar-le-Duc sits in the Meuse, roughly thirty kilometers from Verdun. In 1917, the battle there had already consumed over a million casualties. French small change had vanished entirely — hoarded, melted, or simply lost in the chaos of the most industrialized slaughter yet attempted — and Chambers of Commerce across the occupied and near-front zones were authorized to fill the void with emergency fractional notes. This is one of those.
Berger-Levrault in Nancy was the obvious regional choice: a serious academic and military printer with the infrastructure to produce credible fiduciary paper when the banks could not. The watermark is the note's primary security element, modest but sufficient for the purpose.
