Following World War I, acute metal shortages and disrupted mint schedules left French protectorate Tunisia with insufficient small coinage. The Chambers of Commerce — as they had done in metropolitan France during the same crisis — stepped in to authorize emergency token issues to fill the gap. These essais were trial strikes produced to evaluate the proposed coinage before committing to full production runs, and the 1921 aluminium bronze series never advanced beyond this stage.
