Issued by the Chambre de Commerce et d'Artisans of Perpignan during the First World War, when the French state's withdrawal of silver coinage for wartime metal needs left local commerce effectively paralyzed. Hundreds of French chambers of commerce produced similar aluminum and cardboard emergency tokens between 1914 and 1922, but the Perpignan issues are among the less commonly encountered in circulated survivors, likely reflecting the relatively modest commercial volume of this Catalan border town compared to larger industrial centers.
