Obverse description The crowned coat of arms of the Belgian Congo occupies the central field, depicting a quartered shield bearing a lion passant and horizontal bands, surmounted by a royal crown. The date is split on either side of the shield, with '19' to the left and the last two digits to the right. The legend 'BELGISCH CONGO BELGE' curves along the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering, while 'RUANDA-URUNDI' follows the lower arc, separated from the upper legend by two small five-pointed stars at the sides.
