Nouméa's wartime emergency issues of 1942 were produced under Free French authority after New Caledonia sided with de Gaulle in September 1940 — one of the earliest territories to do so. Cut off from metropolitan printing facilities and from the Banque de l'Indochine's normal supply chain, local treasury authorities resorted to rudimentary locally-produced notes to keep small-denomination commerce functioning.
The Trésorerie de Nouméa series is among the more provisional issues of the Pacific war period. Printing quality reflects the constraints of the time and place rather than any deliberate design economy.
