The Sower (Semeuse) franc series was introduced in 1898 using Oscar Roty's design, which had first appeared on a postal seal in 1895. Roty's original high-relief model required significant reduction for production, and early strikes through roughly 1901 show noticeably sharper field detail than later issues — a consequence of progressive die deterioration at the Monnaie de Paris as production demands increased with the series gaining official status.
The series ran through 1920, at which point postwar inflation and rising silver prices made the .835 fine composition economically untenable. France debased the franc coinage the following year.
