Reverse description Large Lombardic monogram in the form of a stylized capital M, closely derived from the Byzantine numismatic tradition, occupying the central field beneath a cross. The monogram is flanked and surmounted by secondary letters, with the mint signature RAV (for Ravenna) visible in the lower portion of the field. A surrounding Latin legend reads M ANNO - I RAV, denoting the first regnal year of issue at Ravenna. The overall composition follows the layout of Byzantine folles of the period, adapted for Lombard royal coinage.

Additional information

Aistulf captured Ravenna from the Byzantines in 751, ending the Exarchate — the last direct imperial foothold in northern Italy. This follis belongs to the window between that conquest and 754, when Pope Stephen II crossed the Alps to seek Frankish intervention, ultimately setting events in motion that would strip Aistulf of these very territories. That the Lombard king briefly struck coinage at Ravenna at all is the anomaly; the city reverted to non-Lombard control within three years.
