Tancred's claim to the Sicilian throne was contested from the start — an illegitimate grandson of Roger II, he seized power in 1189 ahead of the German emperor Henry VI, whose wife Constance had the stronger dynastic claim. These small bronze issues were struck during a reign defined entirely by that struggle, which Tancred ultimately lost; he died in 1194, and Henry VI took Sicily within months.
