Obverse description Central pellet enclosed within a plain inner circle, surrounded by a Latin legend reading ROGERIVS REX disposed around the circumference. A small cross appears above the inner circle and a pellet below, framed by a beaded outer border. The lettering is bold and irregular, characteristic of the hammered coinage of the Norman Kingdom of Sicily. The overall design reflects the bilingual cultural synthesis of the Norman court.
