Ruggero II was crowned King of Sicily on Christmas Day 1130 — a deliberate echo of Charlemagne — after the antipope Anacletus II recognized his kingdom in exchange for political support. The follaro coinage of his early reign reflects the extraordinary cultural synthesis of his court at Palermo, where Norman, Arab, and Byzantine administrative traditions operated simultaneously, each leaving traces in the monetary system inherited and adapted from the preceding Kalbid and later Norman county period.
Billon issues of this type circulated alongside Arabic-inscribed bronze coins within the same economy, a coexistence that would last well into his son's reign.
