Obverse description Facing nimbate bust of Christ in Byzantine style, depicted frontally with a cruciform nimbus encircling the head. The figure holds a closed Gospel book in the left hand, with the right hand partially visible at the sides. Flanking the bust on either side are stylized plant or foliate motifs in the field. The overall treatment reflects the Italo-Byzantine artistic tradition prevalent in Norman-ruled southern Italy.

Reverse description Three-quarter length facing figure of the Virgin Mary (Theotokos) in the orans posture, with both arms raised and hands extended outward in prayer. The figure is rendered in a frontal Byzantine manner, flanked on either side by a stylized plant or foliate ornament in the field. The composition closely follows Byzantine iconographic conventions adapted by the Norman rulers of Apulia and Calabria for their coinage at Salerno.
