| Obverse description | Frontal effigy of Robert Guiscard rendered as a mid-length, crowned and diademed bust facing the viewer, depicted in a hieratic Byzantine-influenced style. The ruler holds a scepter raised over his right shoulder and a globus cruciger in his left hand, symbols of sovereign authority. The portrait is rendered in low relief typical of Norman-Sicilian hammered coinage of the late eleventh century. |
