1 Follaro - Francesco Sanudo Venetian bagattino type

Cattaro — modern Kotor, in Montenegro — spent much of the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries under Venetian administration, and its municipal coinage closely shadowed Venetian typology as a deliberate expression of that allegiance. Francesco Sanudo served as Venetian rector of Cattaro during 1533–34, one of a succession of appointed governors whose names appear on these small copper issues. The follaro denomination itself derives from the Byzantine follis, a survival in name that by this period had no meaningful connection to its ancient weight standard.
