1 Follaro

Antivari — modern Bar, in Montenegro — operated as a semi-autonomous commune under Venetian suzerainty for much of the fourteenth century, though its coinage asserts a distinctly local identity. The follaro was the smallest denomination in the medieval Adriatic monetary hierarchy, used almost entirely for small local transactions where Venetian silver grossi were simply too valuable to be practical.
