Antivari — modern Bar, in Montenegro — operated as a semi-autonomous commune under varying degrees of Serbian and later Venetian pressure throughout the fourteenth century. The city struck its own copper coinage during this period of contested sovereignty, an unusual privilege for a town of its size on the eastern Adriatic coast. The follaro denomination itself was borrowed directly from southern Italian monetary tradition, reflecting Antivari's commercial orientation toward the Adriatic rather than the Balkan interior.
Dobrinić's reference remains the principal authority on medieval Dalmatian and eastern Adriatic municipal coinage, and this type is among the rarer attributions in that corpus.
