Obverse description Bare-headed laureate effigy of Queen Victoria facing left, her hair drawn back and secured with a ribbon, the laurel wreath rendered in high relief with boldly modelled leaves after the manner of William Wyon's celebrated portrait. The legend VICTORIA REGINA is incuse in raised letters around the periphery, divided left and right of the bust, with the date 1848 positioned in the exergue below. The whole is framed by a fine inner beaded border and an outer raised rim, characteristic of Royal Mint proof and pattern strikings of the period.
