The shift to .500 fine silver for this issue was a direct consequence of wartime silver shortages and postwar treasury pressures — Australia had maintained .925 sterling composition for its florins since Federation, and the 1945 reduction marked the first debasement of the series. The 1946 and 1947 dates represent the entire run of this transitional alloy before decimal planning began absorbing government attention.
