| Descrizione del rovescio | A dynamic central device depicts a nude female figure astride a prancing horse, her long hair and a torch or streamer flowing dramatically behind her in an allegory of progress and celebration. The composition, designed by George Kruger Gray and signed with the monogram KG at the base of the groundline, is executed in bold, sculptural relief. The groundline bears the denomination FLORIN flanked by decorative dots in the lower exergue. The circular legend CENTENARY·VICTORIA·MELBOURNE·1934-35· arcs around the upper and lateral fields. A beaded inner border encloses the design throughout. |

Issued to mark the 1934–35 centenary of both the founding of Victoria and the establishment of Melbourne, this florin was the first Australian coin to carry dual dates — a deliberate minting choice reflecting a celebration that straddled two calendar years. Production was split between the Melbourne and Sydney mints, with the Melbourne issue now considerably scarcer. Total combined mintage came in just under 55,000 pieces, making this among the lowest-mintage florins in the entire Commonwealth series.
The Sydney mint struck its last coins in 1926, and this issue was one of the rare exceptions produced there after that effective closure — a logistical oddity that adds another layer to an already unusual piece.
