| Obverse description | The papal arms of Pius III (della Rovere-Piccolomini), displayed on a pointed oval shield surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys, all set within a quatrefoil or quadrilobe frame. The shield is quartered and charged with the distinctive Piccolomini crescent devices. The surrounding legend, separated by ornamental stops, reads PIVS PAPA TERTIVS, identifying the pontiff as Pope Pius III. The design is rendered in the refined hammered style typical of late 15th- to early 16th-century Roman papal coinage. |
