Leo X — born Giovanni de' Medici — was elected pope in March 1513 and almost immediately set about financing an extraordinarily expensive pontificate through the aggressive sale of indulgences, a practice that directly provoked Martin Luther's Ninety-Five Theses in 1517. The fiorino di camera was the papal variant of the Florentine florin, struck at Rome for curial transactions and diplomatic payments rather than general commerce, which partly explains the high fineness maintained throughout Leo's reign.
Leo excommunicated Luther in January 1521, just months before his own death in December of that year. The entire pontificate that helped fracture Western Christianity is bracketed within this single coin type.
