| Opis awersu | Central field bears the shield of Cardinal Camerlengo Francesco Armellini de' Medici, surmounted by the crossed keys of Saint Peter tied with a cord, the whole ensigned by the papal umbraculum (ombrellino) signifying sede vacante authority. Francesco Armellini de' Medici served as Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church and struck this issue during the sede vacante following the death of Adrian VI in September 1523. The Camerlengo held specific authority to mint coinage in the interregnum — one of the few administrative powers that survived the pope's death intact — making these issues legally distinct from pontifical coinage rather than merely transitional pieces.
The 1523 vacancy lasted roughly seven weeks before Giulio de' Medici was elected Clement VII. Armellini's personal connection to the Medici family made his tenure as Camerlengo during a Medici conclave a matter of some political delicacy.
