Obverse description Central field displays the papal arms of Alexander VI (Rodrigo Borgia): a quartered shield bearing the Borgia bull passant in the lower sinister quarter, surmounted by the papal tiara and crossed keys of Saint Peter, all within a beaded inner circle. The heraldic composition is rendered in the characteristic late-fifteenth-century Roman hammered style, with the tiara's three crowns and the elaborate stole clearly articulated in relief. The circumferential Latin legend reads ALEXANDER PP VI, identifying the pontiff as Alexander the Sixth, separated by pellet stops.
