Obverse description Central field depicts the she-wolf of Siena, the city's heraldic emblem, shown passant and suckling the twins Romulus and Remus, rendered in a bold medieval style with cross-hatched body detail. The figure is set within a plain inner border and surrounded by a beaded or corded inner ring. The circumferential legend in Gothic uncial characters reads SENA VETVS CIVITAS VIRGINIS, identifying Siena as the ancient city of the Virgin, preceded by a cross pattee. The lettering is struck in raised relief against the flat field typical of hammered gold coinage of the period.
