Jordan's first coinage as an independent kingdom appeared in 1949, the year Abdullah I was assassinated at the Al-Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem. The fils denominations had been authorized under the new Hashemite Kingdom, replacing the Palestinian pound coinage that had circulated under the British Mandate — a monetary transition that carried obvious political weight given the 1948 Arab-Israeli War had just redefined the region's borders and left Jordan administering the West Bank.
The Royal Mint in London struck this issue, as Jordan lacked domestic minting infrastructure.
